Çatalhöyük (Çumra)

📖 The Story

Dating back to around 7400 BC, Çatalhöyük is among the most important Neolithic mounds showing humanity's shift to settled life. It is famed for its plan of adjoining houses entered through the roof, its wall paintings and mother-goddess figurines. On the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2012, it offers an exhibition hall and reconstructed sample houses.

Eighteen settlement layers have been identified in the mound; at its peak nearly eight thousand people are estimated to have lived here. Under two great shelter roofs, houses with wall paintings are viewed in place, and the experimental house at the entrance re-creates life entered by ladder through the roof.
