Eflatunpınar Hittite Water Monument

📖 The Story

Near Lake Beyşehir, Eflatunpınar is a monumental sacred pool from the Hittite Empire. Reliefs of gods, goddesses and sun-discs carved on giant blocks face a pool fed by a spring. On UNESCO's tentative list, it is the grandest surviving example of the Hittite water cult.

Winged sun discs crown the god and goddess figures of the relief, and spring water still flows into the pool from the chests of the five mountain gods of the lower row. The monument counts as the largest open-air cult structure outside the Hittite capital Hattusa.
