📖 The Story

Said to have been built by Saint Helena, mother of the Byzantine emperor Constantine, the church has been restored and opened to visitors. Traces of frescoes and icons and its wooden galleries are worth seeing. It is the most striking witness to Sille's multicultural past.

The domed basilica of cut Sille stone took its present form in 19th-century repairs; inside, timber galleries, traces of the iconostasis and fresco fragments can be made out. Continuing to the village's stone lanes, rock chapels and a pastry stop at a Sille coffeehouse is the custom.
