📖 The Story

Set within a volcanic crater with a second cone rising at its centre, Meke Lake is known as 'the Evil-Eye Bead of the World' for its unique geology. Though drought has largely withdrawn its water, the scene remains mesmerising. It is the grandest point of Karapınar's sinkhole and volcanic landscape.

The lake is the work of some five million years of volcanism: first the explosion crater filled with water, then a second eruption raised the central cone. Once a stopover even for flamingos, it has lost most of its water to drought; yet the contrast of black cone and white salt ring remains unmatched for photographers.
