📖 The Story

The tomb of Nasreddin Hodja—believed to have lived in the 13th century and known worldwide for his witty tales—stands in Akşehir. Open on all sides yet fronted by a single huge locked door, it perfectly mirrors the Hodja's humour. Each July an international festival draws tens of thousands here.

The reversed date on his tombstone is read as a last salute to the Hodja's upside-down humour. Around Akşehir, stops like the "centre of the world" stake and the lakeside yoghurt statue carry his tales across the town; festivities are held every early July.
